Legal Land Description
Foothills Natural Region

William A. Switzer Provincial Park was established in 1958; originally called Entrance Provincial Park after the town located at the railway entrance to Jasper National Park, it was renamed in 1974 to honour the first mayor of Hinton. The park is located in a beautiful foothills setting with lodgepole pine, spruce & aspen forests; the area, once known as Fish Lakes Valley, features a chain of five lakes that provide excellent year-round recreational opportunities.

  • 4 beach areas in the park - Jarvis Lake day use area, Jarvis Lake campground, Kelley's Bathtub day use area and Gregg Lake day use area

  • More than 155 bird species have been spotted in the park, including at least 13 species of raptors; canoeing through the park provides excellent opportunities to see water birds, especially loons & grebes; the park's lakes & streams attract osprey, kingfishers & bald eagles; great gray owls live in the deciduous mixedwood forests; & in May, there are common snipes & northern saw-whet owls.

  • There are 4 campgrounds & 3 group campgrounds located throughout the park.

Canoeing/kayakingCanoeing/kayaking
  • Signs along 4 km of Jarvis Creek contain information ranging from beavers & bugs to brown trout; the signs provide insights into significant features of the creek; the interpretive canoe route begins where Hwy. 40 north crosses the creek near Kelley's Bathtub; it ends at Graveyard campground; without too much difficulty you can return to the beginning of the canoe route by paddling upstream.

  • There are 58 km of groomed trails in the park, including 35 km at Athabasca Lookout Nordic Centre, a world-class cross-country ski facility; for detailed information about Athabasca Lookout Nordic Centre, call 780-865-8394.

Athabasca Lookout Nordic Centre
This network of world-class x-c ski trails, groomed for classical & skate skiing, provides skiers with spectacular views of the Rocky Mountains; 1.5 km is lighted for night skiing; trails range from easy to difficult; a few very steep sections; biathlon range & luge facility; 2 warm-up lodges, parking area & training grid; trail use fees are $10.00/day, or purchase a season pass from Hinton Nordic Ski Club for $60.00; mountain biking & ski races held annually.

Freindly Vista Trail
This wheelchair-accessible trail in the Kelley's Bathtub area is surfaced with hard-packed gravel; wheelchairs should be those designed for rougher terrain; assistance may be required on some trail sections; the trail meanders along the shore of Jarvis Lake, through mixedwood & tamarack forest, to scenic Jarvis Creek wetland; there are three rest areas along the route that provide exceptional views of the lake & surrounding mountains.

Indoor Exhibits
Bears, birds & biodiversity! Check out the displays & animal mounts & learn something new at our visitor centre. Drop by for park & area information, and don't forget to check out the view of Kelley's Bathtub. The park visitor centre is open from mid-May until mid-September (visitor centre hours are posted throughout the park). For more information call 780-865-5600.

Interpretive Programs (regularly scheduled)
Public interpretive programs & guided hikes are offered by park staff Friday-Sunday from July 1 until Labour Day. For more information about park interpretive programs, call the park visitor centre at 780-865-5600 or look for our "events" posters situated throughout the park.

Self-guided Interpretive Walks/Hikes
Explore an historic beaver ranch on Beaver Ranch Trail; learn about ice-blocks, beavers & birds Blue Lake Trail; learn about natural history on Kelley's Bathtub Trail; discover tree species, walk an esker & view a "kettle" lake on Kettle Trail; sign out one of 6 adventure backpacks - choose from "bug hunt", "tree cheers", "Switzer birds", "wildflowers", 'wetland critters" & "animal signs" - they can be signed out at the visitor centre or from the campground host.
