Grassland Natural Region

Fish Creek Provincial Park is one of the largest urban parks in North America; it contains areas of mixed forest and open prairie; historic Bow Valley Ranch House (now a restaurant), archaeological sites, including teepee rings and bison kill sites, the visitor centre and extensive environmental education programs are some of the park's attractions.

  • More than 180 bird species have been observed in Fish Creek Provincial Park; great blue herons are common along watercourses, ducks and geese can be seen on the Bow River year-round, and there are bald eagles in the Bow River valley during winter months; raptors common to the area include red-tailed & Swainson's hawks and great horned owls; dense spruce & aspen forests in the park provide excellent habitat for songbirds.

  • The Bow River, which flows along the eastern end of the park, is a world-class trout fishery.

  • There are over 100 km of trails that travel through the park's various habitats.

  • There are a number of paved, granular and single-track biking/cycling trails throughout the park. All biking/cycling is confined to the designated trail system.

Environmental Education Programs
Regularly-scheduled education programs at Fish Creek Environmental Learning Centre (403-297-7827) & Bow Valley Ranch Visitor Centre (403-297-5293).

Guided Interpretive Walks/Tours
Guided tours held in a different area of the park on Tuesdays during July & August. For information about the "Tuesday Tours" program call Fish Creek Environmental Learning Centre at 403-297-7927, the park office at 403-297-5293, or visit Public Programs.

Indoor Exhibits
Fish Creek Archaeological Centre, located in the Bow Valley Ranch Visitor Centre, features interactive displays; a working lab for study of ancient & historical artifacts excavated in the park; & a virtual tour of the park's historic sites; the centre was developed in partnership with the University of Calgary Archaeology Dept; for information call 403-271-6333.

Self-guided Interpretive Walks/Hikes
Kits available for families & youth groups (free of charge); call 403-297-5293 for more information.
