Looking for a way to bring science to life?
Then bring Alberta Parks...to your classroom.
This unique three-part program begins with a high-energy musical theatre presentation--featuring exciting costumes, hilarious characters and lots of audience participation--for your whole school!
Following the presentation, intimate classroom sessions allow for in-depth discussions, hands-on activities, interaction with natural artifacts and question and answer periods.
The package concludes with outdoor field sessions in one of the Edmonton area provincial parks. Field sessions immerse students in an experiential learning environment, challenging them to explore, discover and apply their knowledge in fun hands-on situations.
All aspects of the Parks in the Classroom program address the Alberta Education Science and Social Studies Curriculum for multiple grade levels and topics and generally foster environmental appreciation, understanding, and stewardship.

Kindergarten & Grade 1: Nature Discovery
Curriculum Connection: Seasonal Changes; Needs of Plants & Animals
From spring to winter, our
natural landscapes are always
changing. Through sensory orientated
activities students
explore the forest and uncover the variety
of adaptations and strategies that plants and
animals use to survive and thrive in each season.
Grade 2: Bugology I
Curriculum Connection: Small Crawling & Flying Animals
Students learn about the structure and biology of invertebrates
living in a forest ecosystem. Program activities enable the
students to identify and compare different invertebrates of Alberta,
describe their habitats and relationships with living and non-living
things, and understand an invertebrate's role in maintaining forest
biodiversity. (Study Guide)
Grade 2: Bugology II
Curriculum Connection: Small Crawling & Flying Animals
Part two of the Bugology program examines small crawling and
flying invertebrates living in a wetland ecosystem. Program activities
focus on species identification, adaptations, life-cycles and food
chains. This program can be booked independently or in combination with
Bugology I.
Grade 3: Animal Life Cycles
Curriculum Connection: Animal Life Cycles
Students examine the
growth and development of some common animals found in and around a wetland environment. By observing the life cycles of
insects, amphibians, birds, and mammals, students develop an understanding and awareness of the connections between these
animals and their environment.
Grade 4: Plant Growth & Changes New for Spring 2008!
Curriculum Connection: Plant Growth & Changes
This field study introduces students to a variety of plants in the Beaver Hills. Through a series of hands-on investigations students describe and classify common plants, investigate variations in growing conditions, discover the different forms and functions of leaves, stems, and roots, and explore the importance of plants to the natural environment.
Grade 4: Waste & the Natural World
Curriculum Connection: Waste & Our World
This program examines those organisms that
decompose organic material and recycle it into living systems. Students explore how all living
things depend upon those materials that are repeatedly recycled through the environment. Comparisons are made between our natural systems and the waste generated by humans. Students explore some
of the ways that they can help preserve Alberta's landscapes and biodiversity.
Grade 5: Wetland Ecology
Curriculum Connection: Wetland Ecosystems
This half-day program examines the living and non-living
components of the wetland ecosystem and the formation of
wetlands in the Beaver Hills area. Pond dipping, along with
plant and animal identification, highlight the importance of
interconnectedness between human and natural environments.
Grade 6: Sky Science New for Spring 2008!
Curriculum Connection: Sky Science
Students learn about objects in the day and night sky, a new threat to our environment - light pollution, and how they impact life on earth from migration to feeding patterns and behaviour.
Grade 6: Trees & Forests
Curriculum Connection: Trees & Forests
This program introduces students to the Boreal Forest Ecoregion found in the Beaver Hills. Students hike through
the forest and participate in activities that emphasize forest ecology, species interactions and biodiversity. Students observe the
characteristics of the native trees and shrubs of this region and use classification keys to identify them.
